A custom-built website with its own admin panel, or WordPress?
We build custom sites, so we are not neutral. This page tries to be fair anyway, including the cases where WordPress is the better choice.
The short answer
Choose WordPress if you publish a lot of content with an in-house team and want the biggest pool of developers. Choose a custom-built site with a custom admin panel if you want a faster, lower-maintenance site, an admin screen built only for the tasks you do, and features like inventory and reservations that work the way your business does.
Side by side
How the two compare, point by point.
What it is
Custom site + admin panel
A site designed and coded for your business, prerendered to static HTML, with admin screens built only for the tasks you do.
WordPress
The most widely used website platform: an open-source CMS where you pick a theme and add plugins for extra features.
Speed
Custom site + admin panel
Pages are static HTML served from a CDN, so nothing has to be assembled from a database when someone visits.
WordPress
Pages are built by PHP and a database on each visit unless caching is set up. Heavy themes and plugins slow it down.
Security and updates
Custom site + admin panel
No plugins to patch and no login page on the public site. On the care plan, GatorByte monitors and updates everything for you.
WordPress
Core, theme, and plugin updates need to happen regularly. Outdated plugins are a common way WordPress sites get broken into.
Editing your content
Custom site + admin panel
A custom admin panel for the things that change often (menus, inventory, bookings, events). Small text and image changes are included on the care plan.
WordPress
A general-purpose dashboard that can edit almost anything, with many settings you will never use.
Inventory and reservations
Custom site + admin panel
Built around your rules: availability by date, approvals, deposits, and turnaround days, stored in a real database.
WordPress
Plugins cover the common cases, often with yearly license fees. Unusual rules can mean stacking plugins or paying for custom code anyway.
SEO and AI search
Custom site + admin panel
Every page is prerendered with structured data, so search engines and AI crawlers that do not run JavaScript still read the full page.
WordPress
Good SEO is very possible with the right theme and plugins. Results depend on how well the site is set up and kept up.
Cost to launch
Custom site + admin panel
$1,000 for a custom 1-3 page site. Admin panels and booking systems are quoted per project.
WordPress
The software is free. The costs are design or a premium theme, paid plugins, and setup.
Ongoing cost
Custom site + admin panel
$100/month for managed hosting, SSL, security monitoring and updates, uptime monitoring, small updates, and a monthly report.
WordPress
Hosting, plugin renewals, and someone to run updates and fix conflicts. It varies widely.
Who can work on it
Custom site + admin panel
GatorByte builds and supports it, using common, well-supported tools (React, Node.js, PostgreSQL) that other developers know.
WordPress
A very large pool of WordPress developers and agencies can take it over.
Ownership
Custom site + admin panel
Once paid in full, you own your content, the custom design elements made for you, and your media. GatorByte keeps its underlying frameworks.
WordPress
The software is open source. You own your content, subject to the licenses of the theme and plugins you use.
Which one fits
When each one is the better choice.
WordPress is the better fit when
- You publish a lot of articles and have someone in-house who runs WordPress
- You need a specific plugin ecosystem your business already depends on
- You want the largest possible pool of developers to choose from
- You are comfortable owning updates, backups, and security yourself
A custom site is the better fit when
- You want a fast site that does not need plugin updates or security patching from you
- Your business runs on rules plugins do not handle well: inventory, reservations, deposits, approvals
- You want an admin screen your staff can learn in minutes, with nothing extra on it
- You want every page readable by search engines and AI tools out of the box
A real example
What a custom admin panel looks like.
These are the screens in the staff console we built for Rider Event Rentals, a Covington event rental company. Nothing on it is there for anyone but them.
01
Dashboard
Open requests, revenue booked for the next 30 days, pieces out this week, and which stock is running low.
02
Bookings
Every request, filterable by status, with confirm, decline, and complete actions and internal notes.
03
Inventory
Add, edit, and hide pieces, with photo upload, stock counts, and pricing.
04
Calendar
A month view of confirmed and pending reservations, with turnaround days blocked on either side.
05
Settings
Service area, delivery pricing, deposit percentage, balance due date, and the Google Calendar feed.

Custom website vs WordPress: common questions.
Is WordPress bad?
No. WordPress is the most widely used website platform, and it is a good fit for many sites, especially content-heavy ones with an in-house team. It becomes a problem when a small business is left managing plugins, updates, and security it never wanted to think about, or when its booking or inventory rules need several plugins stitched together.
Is a custom website more expensive than WordPress?
Not necessarily. A custom 1-3 page GatorByte site is $1,000 to launch and $100/month, which includes hosting, security, monitoring, and small updates. A WordPress site can cost less or more depending on the theme, paid plugins, hosting, and who maintains it. Admin panels and booking systems are quoted per project either way.
Can I edit a custom website myself?
Yes, for the content that changes often. We build admin screens for the things you update regularly, like menus, inventory, events, or bookings. Small text and image changes are also included in the $100/month care plan, so you can simply send them to us.
Is a custom website better for SEO than WordPress?
Either can rank well when it is built and maintained properly. Our sites start with things that take extra work on WordPress: every page is prerendered static HTML, pages load fast, and structured data is built in, so search engines and AI tools can read each page.
Can you move my WordPress site to a custom build?
Yes. We rebuild the pages, keep your domain and email working, and redirect your old URLs so existing links keep working and search history carries over as much as possible.
What happens if I stop working with GatorByte?
Under our terms, once the project is paid in full you own your website content, the custom design elements created for your project, and the media you provided, and the care plan can be cancelled with 30 days written notice. GatorByte keeps the rights to its underlying code frameworks and templates. If you need different terms, raise it before the project starts.
